Schools around the state

* The Dallas Morning News has a story on H1N1, given the recent death of a 16-year-old girl from Richardson. The story notes that though there have been some deaths, few are dying from this type of flu. Dallas County officials advise people with flu-like symptoms to get medical attention immediately if they have difficulty breathing, chest pain, an altered mental status or vomiting.

School officials in Amarillo and Canyon say they continue to monitor students for symptoms of flu, but the disease does not appear to have hit the school-age population in those districts so far.

* U.S. News & World Report has a story about the Aldine Independent School District near Houston. The district is larger than Amarillo ISD and has a higher percentage of students that qualify for free or reduced priced lunches. Aldine received a $1 million prize from the Broad Foundation for its efforts in responding to closing the achievement gap among students of different economic backgrounds.
